Where to begin, where to begin? In a word, Wow. Rhapsody's fourth and final installment of The Emerald Sword Saga is a masterpiece. The album starts with the pummeling operatic In Tenebris and then segues into the spectacular Knightrider Of Doom. Knightrider Of Doom is undoubtedly one of Rhapsody's heaviest, fastest and most technical songs to date and the good news is the album gets better. After a bit of a breather (and I stress a bit) with the songs Power Of The Dragonflame and The March Of The Swordmaster the album gets back to it's breakneck speed and classical genius with When Demons Awake and Agony Is My Name. Next comes the real cooling point with Lamento Eroico which features no guitars and relies heavily on keyboards and vocal melodies with masterful vocals from vocalist Fabio Lione. The Album then gets back to pace with Steelgods Of The Last Apocalypse and The Pride Of The Tyrant. The albums closes with the 19+ minute epic Gargoyles, Angels and Darkness which breaksdown into three parts.
All in all this album is a masterful piece of progressive metal heavily tinged with classical music which will be tough to top or follow up. But leave it to Rhapsody to leave us spellbound with their next highly anticipated release Symphony of Enchanted Lands II (Available through SPV September 29th, 2004). For fans of bands like Dragonforce, Dream Theater, Savatage or Trans-Siberian Orchestra this album will leave you breathless and leave all others in the dust.
