Is there another band on the face of this earth that can liken itself to a panzer division? Probably not! Marduk on Panzer Division Marduk is unstoppable.
The album opens with the superb Panzer Division Marduk and it is immediately apparent that Marduk have left behind whatever changes of pace or sense of melody they adopted for Nightwing. This is supremely pissed off black metal. Baptism By Fire is another ass raping mother of a song with Legion once again proving that he is a notch above most Black Metal vocalists. Beast Of Prey is another great song with Fredrick Andersson going insane on his drum kit. With Panzer Division Marduk, the Death Metal touches that have been a part of Marduk's sound again come to the fore. At times, this sounds like an album that may well have arisen out of a jam between Marduk and Deicide at their prime. The more I listen to this album, the more I am reminded of Deicide's classic debut album. It would seem that if you took away Marduk's corpsepaint, you would be left with a band that plays chaotic Death Metal with slight shades of Black Metal.
The chaotic aspect of Marduk's music has never been more apparent. The band sounds more like a ten-ton truck going out of control than ever before. In addition, thanks to the heaviness and the unrelenting pace of these eight songs, Panzer Division Marduk has a feeling of claustrophobic intensity to it that pushes this album to a whole new level.
In an interview to promote this album, Morgan Håkansson likened the band to a Panzer Division that would be thrown against the forces of Christianity. Based on the strength of this album, I'd say the odds are favouring Marduk. This is Marduck's finest half hour yet.
