Endorphins' debut EP "volume one" was something i wasn't expecting. Within the first 30 seconds, i was having the skin ripped off my back by something that reminded me of latter-day Entombed, yet something fresh as well. I was surprised to find out that Endorphins list Kurt Cobain as one of their influences, because there's no Nirvana here. The first track, aptly named "Pussy Killer", is particularly brutal, then breaks down into southern rock reminiscent of Corrosion of Conformity or Down. The song "Grey" on the other hand, is a rather mellow(as mellow as you'll find on this CD) track, with a depressing feel to it.

The lyrics match the music. It's gritty, it's angry, It's abrasive. I was also delighted to find out that there's not many clean vocal parts on this CD at all. For the most part, Michael screams with anguish into the mic. The guitars are chunk-heavy, detuned to god knows what, very sludgy. Some excellent use of samples, particlarly at the start of "Grey", where i almost felt like I was standing in the pouring rain feeling miserable. The drumming is great, Patrick has a lot of skill, especially with the double kick.

My only gripe with this CD, was that at times it sounded a bit Mudvayne/Slipknot-ish. Sometimes the vocals reminded me a little too much of Corey "My Arse Hurts" Taylor, and some of the lyrics border on "fuck the world" stuff. The song "Purple" was a little too much for me. I felt like I was reliving Sepultura's "Roots", something I dont really want to do again. haha.

But overall I liked the CD, and I give it a regular listen. Specifically, the tracks "Pussy Killer" and "Grey" are top-notch songs worthy of any "southern death-rock" fan's collection. I give it 3/5.
