Every now and then I pick up an album purely on instinct. Most times my instincts suck. Eternal Autumn was an instinctive buy and this time my instincts were actually right.

Eternal Autumn play extreme metal. I suppose I could call them a combination of Sodom, Iron Maiden and the Gothenburg scene but calling them an extreme metal band is a lot easier. Also Eternal Autumn happen to be a very good Extreme Metal band. This band is from Sweden and they released "The Storm" in 1998. I know nothing else about them except that this album kicks some serious ass.

Album opener "The Storm" is vaguely reminiscent of the black-thrash band Bewitched. However, manages to still come across as original. The one aspect of Eternal Autumn's music that stands out for me is that while the songs are all heavy and generally thrash metal oriented, the band manages to imbibe a certain sense of melody into everyone of these 11 songs. It is this combination of melody with some super riffing that makes "The Storm" such an entertaining album. A case in point being "As The Last Leaf Fell…" with its melodic start and the progression into a very cool thrashy riff midway into the song.

Eternal Autumn have put out an absolute treat of an album with "The Storm." They broke up soon after this album (I think) and joined the long list of great bands that nobody has heard of. If you see this album somewhere, then pick it up. You will not be disappointed.
