Ok, now onto the review, beware, it has spoilers!
The movie is based upon the novel, of the same name, written by Ian McEwan. I recently had to study this novel for college, so after the exam was over, I decided to check out the movie. It starts off well enough, following the novel and then comes the first diversion. So in the movie, they totally forget about the phone call that puts Joe on edge & then proceed to totally miss the "did he or didn't he see him" scene in the library. This all sucked a little bit of the tension & danger away from the story, but what the hell, at this point in the movie I could have lived with that.
Also missing was practically the whole chapter in the novel where Joe is going to get the gun, yet again, imo, cutting more potential tension & danger from the story. Though, admittedly, the replacement was sufficient and a little be more sedate.
Now, up until the final scene with Joe, Jed Claire, I was enjoying the build-up in the movie. But then they seem to resort to shock tacticts, having Claire stabbed then proceeding to have Joe & Jed passionately kiss, only for the purpose of Joe distracting him to stab him. Totally over dramatic & a totally pointless attempt at a shock tactic. I much prefer the ending in the novel, much more realistic & down to earth.
Overall, however, I did enjoy watching this movie. However, it's not exactly one that I'd watch too often, maybe some other day, if I'm ever feeling in the mood for it.
