The Legend of Drunken Master

Fire and it's aftermath, a seared throat and the aftertaste of charcoal. Bourbon, nectar of the gods. But the night wanes and the amber line retreats; soon the bottle shall be empty. Ragnarok draws nigh.

In vino veritas, as always, the Romans struck close to the heart of the matter. There is an honesty in drunkenness denied to the "clearheaded," a willingness to engage the truths too painful for daylight and sobriety. Music, too, can have this effect. Music draws the line in the sand when we dare not. Music transcends the bonds of "decency" and allows us to see the world as it is, not as others would wish us to believe. Music is hope and despair distilled to the barest essence.

And what of art that touches not upon truth? What of "art" that merely parrots the hopes and dreams of this society gone plastic? In the end, it is naught but empty propaganda, the lies of a broken dream. And so they tell us that "art" is a process, not a result. Art is in craft, in skill, in technicality, in mere aesthetics. Art has no purpose, no goal. Art is fatalism writ large. Art is in the embrace of material ends, art is in accepting the impossibility of transcendence.

LIES! These are nothing but lies. The lies of a shattered people, divorced from being. The lies of the drifting masses, alienated from identity. Lies of the weak, lies of the beaten, lies of people bereft of hope; lies driven by surrender to this material world.

TRUTH! Do you dare hear it? The truth is that art is none of these. Indeed, art is transcendence. Art is hope. Art is the escape from the mundane world of the material. Art is victory over a world of lies!

C'est la vie. C'est l'art!
